Raw Power with Cultivated Dynamism
Design Challenge: With the X5, BMW set out to create an entirely new concept - the Sports Activity Vehicle SAV - a car in which the driver would sense the power of a high-seated, off-road vehicle without experiencing the heavy boxiness of the utilitarian SUV aesthetic.
Design Solution: Since DesignworksUSA is located in Southern California where the SUV marketplace flourished, we were able to bring a rich, first-hand research knowledge to the themes that would evolve into the current X5.
To give visual expression to the X5's sporty handling, our designers blended the side-window openness of our touring car heritage with a markedly assertive stance, scooped, undercut flanks and a large-wheeled, minimal-tread statement wrapped in integrated wheel flares, investing raw power with cultivated dynamism.
A statement of sure-footed road performance, the X5 lives from the bottom up. It sits on a daringly low wide point, a design choice that conveys this vehicle's extraordinary stability and overall safety.
