Design Challenge: Allergan recognized the opportun-
ity to establish a leadership position in the cataract-removal market. The challenge to DesignworksUSA was to rethink the equipment and interfaces and integrate the strengths of the separate modules into one premium system to set new standards for performance, and define the "signature look" for Allergan.
Design Solution: The overall system layout was formed through consideration of portability, modul-
arity, constraints imposed by limited space in operating rooms, workflow patterns and the inter-
action between the product, the surgeon, the scrub nurse and the circulating nurse.
We focused on user-interaction issues involving hardware, software and interpersonal communication. The primary objective was to design a user-friendly product to be utilized by highly trained surgeons, nurses, and first-time users. Our task was to facilitate a time-efficient process, while focusing on the ergonomic and safety issues relating to the system input and feedback.
We reduced the display of information to a single frame environment, in which all information could be readily accessible at all times. We developed a patented input device for ease of managing increment/decrement settings, as well as a patented dual-positioned pedal that pivots 180 degrees to suit all medical personnel.
Allergan's SOVERGEIGN system introduced breakthrough functionality and safety in a sophisticated and user-friendly package. The time efficiency inherent in the product interaction has enhanced the company's competitive advantage by improving the bottom line for the customer.
