Industry + Travel.

Fleetwood: Tioga SLX.

Leading the Fleet.

Design Challenge: Class C Motorhome design had been stuck in neutral since its honeymoon in the early 70’s. Five U.S. Presidents later, Fleetwood saw the opportunity to take the All-American vehicle to a level not seen before.

This design needed to be the first of a new generation for Fleetwood products, for a new generation of buyers: discriminating couples and families who have a new view of what roughing it should mean. In other words, smooth. Camping among the creatures, but creature comforts, too.

Design Solution: Our identified demographic do expect their style answerable to the edicts of efficiency and feng shui. So by design’s end, we had built an architecturally clean and simple "living room" that was the first of its kind in this industry.

The space efficiency of clean, flush cabinetry from Technoform of Italy, coupled with the new floorplans, produces a substantially higher amount of storage within the interior space. We enlarged the scope of our design vocabulary not only to increase available space, but to make it feel more spacious as well. The large "slide-out," for example, expands, giving travelers an extra 20" of living space.

The piece de resistance is the placement of a forward bow window between entertainment center cabinets: a refreshing light source that provides maximum headroom, it also offers seductive aesthetic benefits and viewing possibilities. This is-along with the cab-to-box transition and uniform height of window placement—what we feel gives this Class C Motorhome such a proud and prescient look on the road, in the dealer lot, and in the hearts of its many new fans.
