"Houston….We have Launch"

Design Challenge: DesignworksUSA was asked by Siemens Transportation Systems to introduce a new Light Rail Train exterior design for metropolitan transportation. In the initial stages, STS planed to take this train concept design to offer to other clients. The train concept was launched by the Metropolitan Transit Authority of Harris County, in the city of Houston, Texas. The new train was to be a 70% low floor train with only 30% of the interior at conventional height.

Design Solution: The early design concepts explored STS's identity and their philosophies. Three design concepts were explored; functionality, ergonomics and style, "contemporary" or traditional lines, and radical concepts to push the envelope of STS's thinking.

The exterior design of the new S70 reflects the new technology introduced with this new line. The exterior conveys the message that this train is at the leading edge of technology. It also expresses a relationship to its successful European counterparts, but with the clearly visible influences of a Californian cousin. The front end is flexible in design to accommodate possible front-end changes to adapt to varying client tastes.
