Don't Take Your Eyes of the Road!
Design Challenge: To recapture those 2 to 4 seconds it takes for a rider to refocus on the road after glancing at the dash.
Design Solution: The prototype Blue Eye helmet, developed in collaboration with BMW AG, features the world's first motorcycle head-up display. The rider can see high-resolution data on a color LCD, which is positioned 2 inches from the eye. Displayed below the horizon, in the peripheral view of one eye, the image is small enough to avoid distracting the eye from traffic, but large enough to be useful. Without looking directly at it, the rider can comprehend the displayed information. When the rider glances directly at it, the information is focused far away, at infinity. This process is 4 times faster than reading the information display on the handle bar mounted gauges and allows the rider to keep his eyes focused on the road ahead.
