Design Challenge: To design a feature-rich, high-end business phone built to high durability standards. The goal was to incorporate the added functionalities of a 2-way radio, speakerphone, voicerecorder, e-mail and fax. Further, to integrate an asymmetrical large color display on the inside of the clam-shell along with a traditional one-line LCD on the outside. To communicate the speakerphone function through the form language.
Design Solution: We improved ease of use by reducing the extra step of opening the flip portion. We enhanced audio performance through a unique, visually fascinating "through-hole" flip design, improving sound in speakerphone mode when in closed position. The "through-holes," the proportion of the lens, in-mold decoration and accents and the deep blue color and subtle graphic pattern combine to give the product a slimmer, sleek, high-end appearance. With its quality of materials and construction, this phone is designed for long life and durability.
Technologically, the product's large color display, compact size, and full list of features allows for increased productivity. The "direct-connect" 2-way radio gives its users faster connections, particularly important in emergencies.
The results were immediate, with Motorola's entire annual sales projection being surpassed within two quarters.
