Design Challenge: To design the new Meridian product line from ground up, making the product look more user-friendly, intuitive to use, and extremely durable.
Design Solution: We designed a stylish, outwardly rugged and durable product with focus on the keypad interface, accenting its ease of use. The main innovation was the circular shaping of the unit bottom to coincide with the user-centered 4-way (the most used) navigation button. The circular form factor around the keypad provides for easy access to all keys from many angles, as well as for single hand operation, comfortable for large and small hands.
Improving the ergonomics and usability of the product has helped make this product more popular for trained and untrained expeditions alike. In fact, it has become Magellan's most popular and prominent product, with significant press devoted to the new styling. Our mutual success has fostered a relation-
ship with Magellan, now Thales Navigation, that has spanned over eight years.
Magellan GPS systems have helped a research team track an elusive chimpanzee; scientists discover a meteorite in Antarctica; a non-profit organization find the Nanti village deep in the Amazon to bring medical assistance and other aid; and assisted with the plotting of the distance of the new home plate of the Pittsburgh Pirates to the audience stands.
