An Exercise in Smart Design
Design Challenge: The challenge had our heads spinning from the start. Nothing easy. No simple problem or obstacle to overcome. The client simply said, "Go design the best indoor cycling bike ever created." And "Oh yes, while you’re at it, make it distinctive, approachable, intuitive, motivational, and rewarding."
We thrive on such challenges at DesignworksUSA, so it wasn't long before we'd gotten our heart rate at the proper speed and ideas began to come in flashes.
Design Solution: The Spinner NXT was constructed to meet the rigorous demands of the indoor cyclist: we ought to know, as one of our chief designers is a rigorous, demanding indoor cyclist. The finished product is replete with visual and actual solidity and aerodynamics; the bike is solid, stiff, and resistant to corrosion.
The frame is made entirely of recycled extruded aluminum. The chain guard is molded ABS and the flywheel is made from cast steel. The seat and handlebar sliders are blade-shaped for function and aesthetics.
Most noticeably to the rider, the NXT’s "cockpit" area has been opened up by moving adjustments and water bottle mounts to more beneficial places. Check this out this seemingly small detail: the new water bottle holder has the ability to hold two large-sized containers and has been moved to the handlebar area for easy access while riding. Having the water in plain view acts as a constant reminder to the rider to keep drinking water throughout the class. This is representative of how we approach design: there is no angle ignored, no detail too small.
