Architectural Wind Power
Design Challenge: AeroVironment, Inc. are developers and producers of efficient energy technologies, and the world leader in Unmanned Aircraft Systems. They wished to leverage their expertise in wind power to create an aesthetically pleasing building-integrated wind generator that can produce “Green” electricity in urban settings.
Design Solution: DesignworksUSA has long been committed to sustainable design, and we took this opportunity to support environmental product innovation in collaboration with AeroVironment. The result was the AVX400, a small turbine generator that can be attached to the parapet wall of low-profile commercial buildings, especially “big box” retail stores and warehouse distribution centers. This mini generator has an architectural aesthetic that is meant to be seen, is cost-sensitive, and easy to install. In addition, these turbines can be lined up to aggregate the generation of power even in very slow winds.
The combination of optimal engineering and visual appeal, results in a clean energy generator that optimizes wind capture while looking like a beautiful sculptural object. Our design and engineering teams worked on design details that made a difference— adding adjustment features, building a gracefully curved canopy and incorporating a front grill to protect birds from spinning blades. To bring the product to market, we created scale models, prototypes and context renderings so that AeroVironment can engage with early adoptors who wish to find alternative sources of energy and protect our environment from global warming.
