Soft Sheets of Light
Design Challenge: After working with Haworth to establish the Jump Stuff Work Tools line, they asked us to add a lamp to the line that incorporated Luxo's lighting technology. The challenge was to move away from the monotony of heavy-looking desktop objects, and provide light, soulful, airborne alternatives.
Design Solution: Since approximately 40% of our lives are spent in the working environment, our designers aimed to make it as efficient, uplifting and serene as possible. The Wing Task Lamp is intended to fit into a product system of workstation tools aimed at organizing and uncluttering office desktops.
By working with the lighting experts at Luxo Corp., we designed a lamp that brings the efficiency and ergonomic benefits of asymmetrical lighting into the versatile environment of the Jump Stuff Work Tools line. Asymmetrical lighting systems direct light sideways toward the work surface, reducing the shadows, glare and eye fatigue produced by typical desk lamps. The result is better clarity of media on the desktop as well as less eye fatigue on the user. The Wing lamp allows the user to customize the lamp’s orientation and amount of light. By avoiding the need to flood a desk with light, the Wing Lamp also reduces energy usage.
We designed the aesthetic to blend into the Jump Stuff line – smooth, soft sheets of surface gracefully flowing, suggesting a sail or "wing" aloft.
