Nilfisk: Extreme.

A Vacuum Filled.

Design Challenge: Nilfisk challenged us to change the status quo. They asked us to create a design that heightened the "interest factor" in vacuums as a category, as well as Nilfisk as a brand. How? To start, by designing a vacuum that exists symbiotically in the consumer’s living environment, and does not stand out as a piece of equipment.

The overarching intent was to make this vacuum usefully and powerfully intuitive or it would not matter what it looked like: this was going to require a re-design of the internal structure of this vacuum. Added features (improved dust pick-up, more efficient filtration systems, extremely silent) were going to mean added visual mass, and it was a challenge to visually reduce the overall volume.

Design Solution: By using a metaphor of "airflow" we created a design theme that has a graceful, aerodynamic character which ties in with the functional features of the vacuum. Large airflow character lines start at the air intake, follow to the dust compartment, and continue into the handle in a slimmer manner to accommodate ergonomic requirements. The theme continues into the parking feature and flows into the bottom where the Hepa filter is located. The floor nozzles and accessories pick up the theme in a smaller scale. Nilfisk Extreme is a vacuum cleaner that really goes in line with its name: extreme.
