Pinakothek Der Moderne: Art of Car Design.

50 Days and 50 Nights

> IDEA Gold award winner

Design Challenge: With more than 60,000 artworks in the areas of arts and crafts, graphic design, industrial design and architecture, Pinakothek der Moderne, in Munich, is not only the leading, but the world's largest museum for design and the applied arts. BMW Design was asked to create a work of art to celebrate the artistic processes of Design. The challenge was to create an abstract artistic expression of the Art of Car Design, without advertising or product placement in any way.

Design Solution: BMW Design with DesignworksUSA set out to express the notions of Car Design, the complexity and suspense: the fascination for technology with a passion for aesthetics, the combination of the rational and emotional, traditional and innovative, knowledge and experience, and creativity and perception. The result of this creative car design process is an authentic, man-made sculpture that is reproducible one thousand fold through industrial production.

We created this installation to communicate that sculpture is at the center of the design process and at the same time serves as link between creation and production. The installation is composed of the marble sculpture, a hovering wall, hidden car parts, a 6-monitor film installation, and a night projection system.
